Soffe Cup

All the Soffe Cup tennis was rain affected on Saturday.  In the match between Hooker Pacific Pukekura and Okaiawa at Hawera, Pukekura were leading 6 -2 after the singles.   All the women won their matches with the top two women, Linda Reid and Donna Thorne only conceding three games against Joanne Gyde and Megan Gyde. No 3 Kirsten Adam had a close match against Clare Goldsworthy before coming out the winner, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. 

The men's matches were shared after Zac Wills and Ben Aves, (Pukekura), the No 1 and 3 won their matches against Crichton Parker and Murray Mead and Okaiawa's Andrew Powell and Andrew Baylis won their matches against teenagers, Tony Radich and Quinn Rosa.

The doubles were shared with three out of four going to a third set tie breaker. With the score at 8-4 the match was called because of rain without the combines being played and the remaining points were shared.

 

In the match between Manaia and Kaponga at Manaia, Manaia were leading 6-1 in the singles when the match was called off.  They were all relatively easy wins for Manaia. Kaponga's one win was No 2 Maree Jones who defeated Ashlee Murdoch 7-5, 6-1.

 

Five singles were completed in the Waiwaka v Stratford match at Waiwaka before the rain came.  Waiwaka were leading 7-1 as they won three matches by default.  Stratford only fielded three women. The top two women's matches were both won by Waiwaka in the third set tie-breaker with Clare Fairey and Jayden Bruce defeating Kylie Jury and Tracey Zimmerman. No 3 Glenda Frost defeated Kelsi Bevins 6-3, 6-3. 

In the men's singles - No 2 Chris Popata didn't drop a game against Elliot Campbell and Stratford's No 3 Bruce Cleland defeated Jordan Stayt 1-6, 6-1, 7-6.

 

Hooker Pacific Pukekura has a jump on the rest of the field with 42 points, Midhirst is second on 26.

Midhirst had the Bye.
