A strengthened Midhirst
team had a win over a depleted Sandfords Manaia team in Soffe Cup tennis on
Saturday.
Chris Brown and Kathryn
O'Sullivan who were rep players last season, returned from overseas and
both had two wins. Brown, playing at No 2 defeated Alaister Murdoch 6-4, 6-4
while O'Sullivan defeated Alesha Ford 6-4, 7-5.
Midhirst were ahead 5-3
after the singles. No 2 Mike O'Sullivan and No 4 Neil Kingston defeated
Kevin Tosland and Jacob Gopperth respectively. Manaia's No 1, Jason
Mills had little trouble defeating Jono Ussher 6-3, 6-0.
In the women's singles,
Midhirst's No 3 Shelley Childs had a 6-2, 6-0 win over Abby Death while
Manaia's No 2 Cindy Death beat Lyn Stanners 6-1, 7-6 and No 4 Irene
Cruikshank had a win over Marlene Foreman 6-1, 7-5.
MIdhirst took out the
men's doubles and the top women's doubles while the combines was shared.
Hooker Pacific Pukekura
had an 11-5 win over Kaponga at Kaponga. They were ahead 6-2 after the
singles with the top three men winning and all but the No 1 woman winning.
No 1 Zac Wills defeated Len Adamson 6-3, 6-3 while No 2 Tony Radich only
dropped one game in his match against Kyle Crowley. No 3 Ben Aves had a
three set win over Jason Hurley and Kaponga's No 4 Brad Dowdle scored a 6-1,
6-3 win over Meto Snegirev.
Kaponga's top player,
Krystal Oakes had a hard fought 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 win over Linda Reid and
Pukekura's No 2 Donna Thorne had a 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 win over Maree Jones. The
No 3 and 4 women, Kirsten Adam and Jeanette Harding had easy wins however.
In the doubles Pukekura
won one men's and both women's and followed that up by winning the top two
combines.
The win increased
Pukekura's lead at the top of the table, they have 48 points , 6.25 ahead of
Waiwaka on 41.75. Manaia is in third place on 40.75.
Accent on Curtains
Waiwaka defeated Stratford by default because Stratford's women were all
unavailable.
