This weekend will see the last round of Soffe Cup before the semi-finals on
Saturday 14th March and a representative fixture against Manawatu on
Sunday 1st March.
South Combined will be hosting Pukekura in Hawera. South Combined will be
looking to perform well with a victory giving them a chance of making the
semi-finals. It will require a mammoth effort with Pukekura comfortably
the top team on the points table.
Stratford will be at home to Oakura. Stratford will be playing for pride,
as they are the only team unable to make the semi-finals. Oakura will be
looking to maintain some good momentum heading into the business end of the
season. If Oakura plays all of their top players, they should be too much
for Stratford to handle. Of course, Stratford will be buoyed by having
posted their first win of the season last weekend.
The most interesting tie of the weekend will be Rotokare hosting Huatoki.
These teams are within four points of each other on the table and will want a
positive result moving into the semi-finals. Both teams also want to make
sure they reach those semi-finals. With only seven points between Huatoki
and South Combined, Huatoki will be desperate for a win to stay in the top four
and a playoff spot. Huatoki will have the services of Jayden Harrison for
the first time this season. This gives Huatoki’s men a real capability to
trouble Rotokare. With Sophie Robertson in attendance at the top of the
order for Huatoki’s women, Rotokare will have to put their best team out if they
want to win the tie and stay in third place overall.
Sunday will then see Taranaki’s best tennis players combine to take on Manawatu. There will be A and B teams doing battle at the Rotokare and Huatoki courts. Six men and six women will comprise the teams. It is a fixture the two provinces hotly contest and are often still undecided heading into the last few matches. Good luck to all those playing for their clubs and Taranaki this weekend.
