In Soffe Cup
tennis on Saturday, Sandfords Manaia had a crushing 13 -3 win over
Hooker Pacific Pukekura at Manaia.
They got off to
a flyer winning the singles 7-1, although three of the singles wins
went to the third set tie-breaker.
No 1 Jason Mills
defeated Zac Wills 6-4,1-6, 7-6 while No 2 Thomas Luxton had a close
6-4, 7-6 win over Tony Radich.
The other men's
matches were easy wins for Manaia, Cameron Koch defeated Ben Aves
6-0, 6-1 while Michael Gates beat Meto Snegirev 6-4, 6-1.
In the battle of
the top two Taranaki players, Manaia's top player Nicole Koch
defeated Linda Reid 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 and Alesha Ford also had a three
set win, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 over Donna Thorne. Pukekura's only singles
win was No 3 Kirsten Adam's 6-1, 6-4 win over Abbey Death and Irene
Cruikshank made her first appearance in Soffe Cup this season and
defeated Janette Harding 6-0, 6-3.
Pukekura fought
hard in the doubles and combines with a few close matches but Manaia
was too strong, winning 6 -2.
Midhirst had an
important 10-6 win over Stratford at Stratford and is now
competition leader, six points ahead of Pukekura.
Leading the way
were the women who won all their matches. Lyn Stanners, Shelly
Childs and Debbie Wheeler had easy wins over Brenda Gibbons, Kyle
Jury and Tracey Zimmerman. No 4 Liz O'Sullivan prevailed in a three
setter over Min Zimmerman.
Stratford's men
won three singles. No 1 Gavin Phelan had a good win over Jono Ussher,
1-6, 6-3, 7-6 and No 3 and 4, Bruce Cleland and Grant Kite defeated
Val Cleaver and Stephen Uhlenburg. Midhirst 's Micheal O'sullivan
had a three set win over Elliot Campbell.
Midhirst won
three out of four doubles, two of them in the third set tie-breaker,
only dropping the top men's match while the combines were all
square.
Kaponga had a
10-6 win over Okaiawa at home. It was even after the singles with
Kaponga's women picking up three matches.
Leith Atkins,
Helena Goodin and Carolyn Koch won their matches over Joanne Gyde,
Clare Goldsworthy and Carol Fergus.
Okaiawa's No 3
Michelle Powell won her match against Michelle Atkins.
Okaiawa's men
won the top three matches, Crichton Parker had a three set win over
Len Adamson and Kyle Crowley and Jason Hurley were defeated by
Jeremy Moore and Andrew Powell. Kaponga's Brad Dowdle
won his match against Andrew Baylis.
In the doubles,
Kaponga's women won both their matches while the men's was shared.
It was 7-5 going into the combines and Okaiawa had to win them all
to take the tie but they only managed one win.
