Most Soffe teams struggled to field their top teams this weekend and the results
showed.
Farmlands Okaiawa almost caused a boilover with an 8-all draw with Hareb Deken Oakura, Sandfords Manaia beat Naki Racquets Pukekura 10-6, while AWE Huatoki lost 9-7 to Central Finance Rotokare.
Taranaki No. 1 Jordan Fleming had an unexpected loss against a determined Jaime
Simpson while brother Beauden Fleming was unable to foot it with Pukekura's Mike
Fleming, going down in straight sets. Manaia's No.3 Jacob Gopperth succumbed to
Chris Jury in straight sets while Josh Murdoch at 4, held out Brady Simpson in a
tough 3 setter. In the women's, Nicole Koch, Alesha Ford and Trudy Vince
all breezed past their respective opponents, Linda Reid, Donna Thorne and
Chantelle Peters, while Grace Kelly lost the first set but was able to get the
next two over Tania Fleming.
Huatoki put up a good fight but in the end Rotokare were too strong in the
combines and took the honours. Huatoki's Alastair Nairn was no match for
German doctor, Andre Lundt. Dave Innes had his chances against Malcolm
Elder, while Chris Avery couldn't get it going against a clinical Shane Devlin.
Cory Sutherland at 4, edged out Rotokare's Jaden Hareb in a hard 3-setter.
Alice Caskey, back from University at No.1 was a bit rusty with Karen Cranston
taking the match in three sets; Sophie Robertson easily dispatched Frances
Gray while Hikaru Han had a battle royale against the two-handed Helena Goodin,
before winning in 3 sets. Tracey Old used her power game to roll over
young Hannah Trevis.
Okaiawa No.1 Hamish Mead had to bow to the superior Graeme Mitchell in straight sets but eslewhere Okaiawa's men were dominant, with Mark Laurence, Vincent Baylis and Ryan Stockman beating Oakura's Len Adamson, Tei Walden and Andrew Pittman respectively. In the women's, Oakura fought back with Emmah Ussher, Jaimee Baylis and Lauren Fraine going down to Paula Ferguson, Jackie Keenan & Chris Davies in straight set losses. Okaiawa's only win came from Vicki Roberts over Rebecca Scott. Both men's doubles went the way of Okaiawa, both women's doubles to Oakura and then then combines were shared.
