Sunday Soffe Cup Tennis Thrills in Taranaki

The Soffe Cup continued on Sunday, having made way Saturday for representative tennis between Taranaki and Hawkes Bay.

Oakura hosted Inglewood and managed a win, Okaiawa hosted Stratford and pulled out a win at home and Pukekura got the better of Huatoki at Pukekura. 


Oakura started strongly to lead 5-3 after the singles.  The tightest match amongst these was the number three women’s match between Inglewood’s Michaela Spurdle and Oakura’s Ana Spurdle.  Eventually Ana managed to win out 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Oakura went further ahead by claiming three of the four doubles.  The two teams shared the combines two each; this saw Oakura finish the day ahead 10-6.

Okaiawa proved too strong for Stratford.  Okaiawa were already 6-2 ahead after the singles.  The match of the day was between Okaiawa’s Ricky Clement and Stratford’s Shane Jury.  Jury managed to just edge out his opponent 6-3 5-7 6-4. 

Okaiawa then claimed three of the four doubles to seal the victory before the combines were played.  Okaiawa won three of the four combines to win overall 12-4.


Pukekura managed to edge out Huatoki.  Five of the singles matches went to three sets, the closest being the match between Pukekura’s Nicole Kowalewski and Huatoki’s Ellen O’Byrne.  O’Byrne managed to outlast her younger opponent and win the match 5-7 6-3 7-6(4). However, Pukekura led 6-2.  In the doubles Huatoki made a comeback and won three of the four rubbers. The closest match was the bottom men's doubles, where Huatoki’s Dave Innes and Shane Douglas got the better of Andrew Moffat and Tomi Avery, 4-6 6-4 7-6(6). This left the score 7-5 going into the combines.  Pukekura managed to hold their nerve, claiming three of the four combines. This left the final score 10-6.

This Saturday will see the fours competition and the Wilson Trophy get underway again. 

In the Soffe Cup Stratford will host Rotokare, Huatoki will be at home to Okaiawa, Pukekura will be welcoming Oakura and Inglewood has the bye.
