Taranaki Tennis Round 4 Preview
The weather is looking favourable and Taranaki tennis should be in for a treat
this weekend. Soffe Cup is set for some exciting match ups.
South combined will be making the trip north to Stratford. Stratford is
still looking for its first win of the season and will need to cause more than
one upset for this win to be theirs. If all of South Combined’s usual line
up are available, it could be quite a long Saturday for Stratford. That
said, if players like Courtney Tippett and Michael Boland play to their
potential for Stratford and Hamish Mead is absent from the South Combined side,
it could be a much closer run tie.
Huatoki will be hosted by the still unbeaten Pukekura. Nikayla Barnard
will be available for the Pukekura women this weekend, which will greatly
strengthen the team in general. Andrew Moffitt will be making the step up
to Soffe Cup for the second time this season for Pukekura and will be hoping he
can improve on the form he showed against Rotokare’s Luis Silva. If he
finds a consistent length with his infamous backhand slice then victory is
possible. Moffitt’s inclusion in the team suggests Huatoki may have
opportunities to pick up wins in the men’s side of the contest. Players like
Huatoki’s Ross Lilley and Murray Keast will be looking to take advantage of a
weaker opposing line up. Chris Wilson will, as always, play to the very
last point for Huatoki and give nothing but her best.
In the third match-up of the day, Rotokare will be hosting Oakura.
Oakura’s fortunes may once again hinge on the availability of Jaime Simpson.
If he is able to play near the top of the order it makes for a strong team;
especially when partnered with Graham Mitchell in the top doubles. The
team will be bolstered with the return of Andrew Hood from university.
Hood will slot in as a very able number 4. This tie looks to be the one
which will be most closely contested, so if spectators are looking to get out
and watch some top tennis, Rotokare tennis club at 10am is probably the place to
be.
In the Wilson Trophy, South Combined will host Waitara, Pukekura welcomes Oakura
and Rotokare will travel to Inglewood.
In the Sumpter Trophy, Huatoki is at home playing South Combined and Oakura does battle on their home turf with Pukekura.
