Soffe Cup Tennis Sees Stratford Record First Win

Another weekend of Soffe Cup tennis has passed and some interesting results were recorded.

Stratford will be a much happier team, having recorded their first win against South Combined at home, 9-7.  The victory took a great many things to fall into place for Stratford.  Firstly, South Combined had only two women taking part; half the required number.  Added to this was the lack of availability of both Abby Ross and Hamish Mead, so Stratford started the day with five guaranteed wins and the rest of the South Combined team playing out of their usual playing order.

South Combined performed well on the men’s side of things but had their clean sweep of the singles halted by a dominant Ross Slinger, who overcame South Combined’s Les Symes 6-1 6-1.  Perhaps the definitive moment of the tie came in the bottom men’s doubles when Slinger paired with Paul Waite to overcome South Combined’s Symes and Andrew Baylis 7-6(3) 6-7(2) 7-6(10-7).  This gave Stratford the breathing room they needed to win the tie outright, rather than requiring a countback.

Rotokare hosted Oakura and lost a tightly fought affair, 7-9.  The tie saw a clear split between the dominance of Rotokare’s men and Oakura’s women.  At the end of the day, Oakura’s women proved to be slightly more dominant and carried the day for their team.  Oakura’s women did not drop a set in the doubles or the singles, whilst Oakura’s Len Adamson managed to beat Shane Devlin 2-6 6-3 6-2.  Oakura’s men also picked up a win in the doubles with Jordan Fleming and Brady Simpson proving too strong for Rotokare’s Will Roberts and Shane Devlin, 6-1 6-0.  This left Oakura needing just one victory in the mixed doubles to win overall.  This was looking in doubt but Len Adamson and Becky Bruckner claimed the only combines win for Oakura 9-4.

Pukekura played hosts to Huatoki and won 14-2.  Huatoki’s two wins came in the top women’s match, with Sophie Robertson getting the better of Ella Rogers 6-4 6-3.  Huatoki’s women then recorded another win in the bottom doubles with Chris Wilson and Jae Laurence combining to better Linda Reid and Kim Carr 6-2 7-5.  Overall it was a dominant performance against a Huatoki team that was under strength.

In the Wilson Trophy, Waitara lost at home to South Combined 6-10, Oakura lost at home to Pukekura 6-10 and Rotokare lost at home to Inglewood 2-14.

In the Sumpter Trophy, Pukekura lost at home to South Combined 5-11 and Huatoki won at home over Oakura 9-7.
