Perfect conditions at the Rotokare
Tennis Club on Tuesday night for an appreciative crowd who were entertained from
start to finish by players using every inch of the court.
After a nail-biting win over his father last week, Caleb Fleming faced another Taranaki tennis legend in Graeme Mitchell whose footwork learnt as a Northland junior gave him the edge over Fleming, winning 7-4, but lots of long rallies that tested both players. The doubles game when Fleming paired with Shaun Alborough and Mitchell with David White was also a crowd-pleaser, Mitchell and White the victors by 7-5. Great effort by Graeme Mitchell and David Barnard who were both unbeaten in all 3 matches.
Sam Howard was in good form with a 7-1 win over Beauden Fleming, but Fleming got his revenge when he teamed with Meto Snegirev, in his debut premier league game to win the doubles tie 7-4. Phillip Wightman is improving every week and was too polished for Snegirev in the singles. After getting off to an early lead Jayden Harrison had another good win, this week over Brady Simpson who couldn’t match Harrison’s consistency, going down 7-4.
