In the last
games of round 1, Soffe Cup holders Sandfords Manaia scraped home 9-7
against Hooker Pacific Pukekura at Pukekura on Saturday.
Pukekura would
be pleased to have got 7 games as they had a totally new men's line-up.
The singles were shared 4 all after Manaia's Jason Mills easily accounted
for Paul Simpson 6-3, 6-1 in the top match while Pukekura's No 2, Andy Erb
won 6-0, 6-3 against Michael Gates. The no 3 singles was taken out by
Manaia's Kelvin Tosland who didn't concede a game against Damien Stewart
while Pukekura's Andrew Darney won 7-6, 6-2 against Manaia's Cody Fleming.
Manaia's No 1
Nicole Koch had a tight first set against Linda Reid winning 7-5
before taking out the second 6-3. Pukekura's No 2 and 3 Donna Thorne and
Jeanette Harding won their matches against Alesha Ford and Ashlee Murdoch.
In the no 4 match Manaia's Ginny Death beat Carole Medway.
The doubles
were shared after Manaia won the men's and Pukekura the women's. The
tie was decided in the combines with Manaia winning three out of four, the
crucial one being Fleming and Murdoch defeating Darney and Medway 9-7.
Pukekura's Captain, Donna Thorne won three out of three while Manaia's Jason
Mills and Kelvin Tosland had perfect records.
AWE Huatoki had
as easy 15-1 win over Okaiawa at Huatoki, after Okaiawa could only field 3
women and only had three of their usual team playing. No 4, Amrit Rai, (aged
14) won all his games, defeating Ryan Stockamn 6-1, 6-3 and teaming up with
Ben Robbins to defeat Vincent Baylis and Stockman in three sets. He won his
combines by default. Okaiawa's solitary win was by No 3 Vincent Baylis
who defeated Robbins 6-0, 6-3.
The rest of the
games were easy wins for Huatoki, apart from the top doubles with Jonathan
Ussher and Neil Bridgeman winning 6-2, 7-5 against Andrew Powell and Andrew
Baylis.
In the other
match played at Waiwaka, the home side beat Stratford /Midhirst 10-6. No
details are available.
Newcomers
Rotokare finished top of the table on 71 points followed by Manaia on 67 and
Huatoki on 66.
Okaiawa finshed
in seventh place so has been relegated to the Wilson Trophy.
