Secondary Schools Tennis Nationals - NPGHS

We were delighted when the NPGHS Tennis team qualified for the National Secondary School finals in Auckland during summer tournament week. The team was a mix of youth and experience.

Leading our team was Year 9 student Louise Waite, who started at Girls' High this year after a successful season playing Soffe Cup for Pukekura and the Taranaki Senior A team, as well as competing successfully in many national age group competitions. Sophie Robertson filled the number two position. She has also had a successful season playing Soffe Cup and for the Taranaki Senior A team. Beccie Atkins, Kelly Jury and Libby Wichman made up the rest of the team.

We were put into a very tough pool with the top two seeds St Kentigerns College and Westlake Girls' High School. Both teams beat us but not without Kelly winning against an opponent ranked three grades higher than her. St Kentigerns went on to beat Westlake in the final.

Our team narrowly lost to St Margaretís College 4-2 and Queen Margaretís College. We finished on a winning note beating Waikato Diocesan 5-1 to claim 7th position overall.

Many of the tennis players that our girls played were NZ ranked. The number one seed for St Kentigerns has a senior ranking of 11th in NZ and many of the tennis players travel overseas and play at international tournaments. Most of the teams have professional coaches and daily tennis clinics. Louise however, was impressive in her debut for the school playing against girls much older and more highly ranked than her. Kelly was also impressive winning three singles matches and Kelly and Sophie Robertson were unbeaten in their doubles.

Congratulations to the team and many thanks to Leith Atkins who assisted in coaching the team.
