There were no upsets on Day 1 of the University Games tennis tournament held
at the natural grass courts in Hawera. All seeded players in the singles
and doubles have progressed through to the quarter-finals and semi-finals
respectively.
No.1 seed in the men, Sam Vinton-Boot (VIC) had a 9-0 win over Henry Rowe (AKL).
No. 2 seed Blair O'Brien (AKL) also had an easy 9-1 win over Keshav Vedire (AKL).
Joining them in the quarter-finals are No. 3 seed Andrew Kemp (AKL) and No. 4
seed, Taranaki's Zac Wills (VIC), as well as Ryan Everiss, Nick Hammond,
Jonathan King, (all AKL) and Taranaki's Vincent Baylis (Massey).
In the Men's Doubles, top seeds Kemp/O'Brien are through to the semi-final where they play Taranaki and Massey Univ pair Baylis/Ryan Stockman. No. 2 seeds Vinton-Boot/Wills will play Hammond/Mathew Cutfield (AKL).
Top seed in the women's singles, Rebecca Lee (AUT) was clinical in her win over Carmia Schoeman (AKL) 9-2, as was the No. 2 seed Wendy Owen (AUT) in her 9-1 win over Lucy Mitchell (AKL). They were joined in the quarter-finals by Samantha Wong, Melissa Melrose, Rachel Leong, Aditi Rai (all AKL), Kelsy Smith (Massey) and Hanna Baxter (VIC).
In the doubles semi-finals, Lee/Owen will play Leong/Ying Swan Ong (AKL), whilst in the other match Rai/Wong will play Mitchell/Azra Elia Zamri (AKL).
