Soffe Cup Tennis gets underway Saturday. This year, teams will be trialling a new format. The goal is to shorten the day and attract more to the sport. The first week will see teams playing singles then men’s and women’s doubles, giving a total of 12 games, the following week there will be singles and combined doubles; which is also a total of 12 games. This change also applies to the Wilson and Sumpter Trophy which starts in a fortnight.
Farmlands Okaiawa, has join the competition replacing Waiwaka. With 7 from the squad of 12 having played in the 2008/2009 season (when they was last in the cup competition) Okaiawa may surprise. Tough ask when playing Sandford Manaia at Manaia. Fielding a similar team to the one that won the Soffe Cup last season Manaia’s Nicole Koch heads up the women’s line up, with Jordan Fleming the men’s.
Huatoki hosts Central Finance Rotokare with both teams suffering serious depletion to their ranks. Huatoki’s men have seen their top 4 players from last year leave the province. However, Ajeet Rai will be available to play Malcolm Elder. Rotokare are awaiting the return from injury of Karen Cranston and Beccie Atkins. The top ladies match of the day will be Alice Caskey and Tania L’Ami.
Last but not least will be the closest of the three clashes, Icon Sports Tariki Pukekura who travel to Oakura. With the experienced Chris Jury joining the team, the top men’s doubles match between Callum Old / Chris Jury and Graeme Mitchell / Josh Walden will be a must see. Up and coming junior Louise Waite joins the women’s line up. Hareb Deken Motors Oakura ‘s line up for 2011/2012 is a nice mix of experience and juniors with three of the team from the Walden family, Josh, Tai and Miaana.
