Soffe Cup sees Huatoki Dominate

The last round of Soffe Cup tennis before Christmas saw Huatoki get the better of Stratford, Okaiawa come out on top of Inglewood and Rotokare were way too strong for Oakura.

At home, Huatoki were too strong for Stratford, running out winners.  In the men's singles, Stratford's Ross Slinger managed an upset over Huatoki's Ross Lilley.  Lilley is an attacking player and missed a lot of volleys he would traditionally make.
Huatoki's women dominated all of the singles with Ellen O'Byrne winning 6-0 6-0.  There was some controversy in the men's top doubles; Ross Lilley kept moving when the opposition players were serving.  Grant Kite in particular was double faulting and questioned if this movement was within the spirit of how the game should be played.  After a short discussion play continued, with Stratford's Kite and Old winning the match 6-0 6-4.

The doubles were evenly split so Stratford had a chance of drawing if they won all of the combines.  It was not to be and, instead, Huatoki won all four to finish 12-4 ahead.

Rotokare dominated Oakura. The final score line saw the away team concede only two matches; both in the singles.  Rotokare's Taylor Nelson had a good three set win over Caleb Fleming in the top men's singles 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Oakura finally going down 14-2, really offered little resistance and will be hoping top players are available more regularly after the Christmas break.

Okaiawa, hosting, managed to get the better of Inglewood.  After the singles Okaiawa held a 6-2 lead. They then claimed three of the four doubles so the two winners bonus points were already theirs.

Inglewood won three of the four combines to make the score line more acceptable.

The Soffe Cup will now take a break until the new year.
