Taranaki
players featured in several finals of the Manawatu Open tennis champs held
from January 4-8 in Palmerston North.
In the final of
the under 18s, Josh Walden ( Oakura) the 2nd seed, defeated Matawahu Durie
(Manawatu) 6-3 6-3.
He then teamed
up with Jordan Fleming ( Manaia) in the doubles, losing in the final 6-0 6-2
to Tai and Tutere Durie ( Manawatu).
In the under
14s, Jordan Fleming, the 4th seed, lost in the final to Tutere Durie, the No
1 seed, 6-0 6-0.
Tei Walden
(Oakura), unseeded, lost in the quarterfinals 7-5 5-7 6-3 to Jacob Strang (Paraparaumu),
the 6th seed.
In the doubles
Fleming and Walden, the 2nd seeds, lost in the final to Tai and Tuture Durie,
6-0 6-2.
In the final of
the consolation singles, Michael Lloyd (Manaia), the 8th seed, defeated Sam
Butters ( Wanganui ) 9-2.
In the under
14s girls' doubles, Macayla Fleming (Manaia) and Samantha Rowe (Manawatu)
lost in the finals to Paige Hourigan (Wanganui) and Anna France Ruben
(Wellington), the top seeds, 6-4 7-5.
