Soffe Cup Review - 4 November 2017 

Another weekend of Soffe Cup tennis draws to close and results ran true to form.

Oakura took on Stratford and proved to be too strong. The men's singles resulted in a game tally of 48 to Oakura, with Stratford scraping 9.  Graeme Mitchell was feeling particularly uncharitable at number two and ran out with a 6-0 6-0 result over Grant Kite.  The shining light for Stratford came from Kristin Laurie, who managed Stratford's only win of the singles—a hard fought 6-2 1-6 6-4.  Stratford picked up one doubles and one mixed doubles to wind up well beaten by Oakura 13 to 3.
 

The Okaiawa/Manaia match against Pihama was a much closer tussle.  Either team, with a little luck on their side could have carried the day.  Two of the doubles matches were decided by only two points. Baylis/Baylis lost to Padilla/Stevenson 2/6 6/2 7-6 (10-8), in what must've been an absolute nail biter.  Johnston/Chang then evened the tight match ledger by beating Matthews/Joyce 3-6 6-0 7-6 (10-8).  In the end, Okaiawa/Manaia managed to win 3 of the four mixed doubles to snatch a 9-7 win overall. Come the second round this result could be easily reversed.

Huatoki must have wished that the rain had kept falling today. Whilst the score line of 12 matches to 4 would suggest a comfortable win there were matches that could have gone either way. A great illustration of this was in the men's doubles. Huatoki's Nairn/Keast lost to Crowley/Campbell 6-7 (7-2) 6-3 7-6 (10-8).  Revfeim/Wichman also lost to Baxter/Devlin 6-4 6-7 7-6 (7-3).  If both these matches had gone the way of Huatoki, it would have been so much closer heading into the mixed doubles.  It highlights how important every single point can be.

Pukekura had the bye this week.
