Pukekura lost for the first time since the final of the 2016-17 season.

Another sensational Saturday of Soffe Cup tennis has come to a close and, as predicted, there were plenty of tight tussles.

Oakura managed to get the better of Pukekura. Things looked promising for Pukekura as the men picked up three wins from the four singles ties; Pukekura’s Brady Simpson lost comfortably to Graeme Mitchell 6-1 6-2. These fortunes were reversed for the women with only Pukekura’s Sue Oldfield managing to have a win over Ella Rogers. This match was probably the tussle of the whole tie. These two players battled it out for well over 2 hours. The final score was 4-6 6-3 6-3. Oakura won three of the doubles to edge ahead of Pukekura heading into the mixed. Oakura then substituted Jaime Simpson in for the mixed. This allowed the others players to drop down and Oakura ran out winners by clinching three of the mixed doubles. This will put them top of the table at the end of the first round, barring some kind of unexpected performance next weekend.

Rotokare went down convincingly to Okaiawa/Manaia 12-4. Rotokare lost all of the men’s singles. Three of these were in three sets. The Rotokare women reversed this trend by winning three out of the four singles matches. However, it would appear that winning these close men’s matches gave the combined team the impetus to move into the doubles and mixed doubles with a positive mind set. Rotokare managed to pick up just one more match in the rest of the day.

Pihama proved to be far too strong for Huatoki, cleaning up 11-5. That said, there were six matches that could have, on another day, swung in favour of Huatoki. It has been a tough season for Huatoki so far—not getting a lot of luck in terms of results or player availability. It is concerning for Huatoki, who at present will be doing well to stay off the bottom of the table and avoid relegation. It must be frustrating for the club as, when at full strength, they can produce dominant performances like the one against Stratford.

Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of this tie was one player making his Soffe Cup debut for Huatoki. That player was, and I hope he doesn’t mind the mentioning of his age, 75 year old Ian McKillop. Ian has played at all kinds of levels during his long lasting tennis career. Whilst McKillop and his partner Wichman did not win their doubles, they certainly competed at a high level.  Wichman will be the first to admit that he dumped far more returns of serve in the net than his partner.
