All
Soffe Cup matches were scheduled for South Taranaki on Saturday and the rain
stayed away to allow all but one game to be completed.
Hareb Deken
Motors Oakura had to fight hard for its 9-7 win over Sandfords Manaia at
Manaia . Manaia looks to be on the comeback trail after missing out on a
semi-final spot last season.
Although Oakura
were without Josh Walden and Leah Fletcher on Saturday, they have gained the
valuable services of another rep player, Alesha Ford from Manaia. She was
beaten 6/3,6/1 by Manaia's No 1 Nicole Koch. Oakura's women won the rest of
the singles, At No 2, Sue Oldfield beat Irene Cruikshank 7/6, 6/1, Becky
Bruckner beat Helen Johnston in the No 3 match while Miaana Walden beat
Shinae Bailey by the same score. Manaia had Cameron Koch in the No 1
spot and beat John Hardie Boys 4/6,6/2,7/6. Koch did not play last season
due to injury and he will be vital to the team's success.
Manaia won two
other singles matches, No 3 and 4 Michael Gates and Alaister Murdoch beat
Len Adamson and Tei Walden respectively. Oakura's No 2 Graham Mitchell had
an easy win over Taranaki B rep Jacob Gopperth.
With the scores
at 4-4 after the singles, Oakura gained the advantage by winning three out
of four doubles. They won both women's matches and the top men's match. The
mixed doubles were shared 2-2.
The win puts
Oakura in second place on 28 points, five behind leaders Rotokare on 33
while Manaia are in fourth spot on 20 points, 0.5 behind Hooker Pacific
Pukekura.
At Matapu, AWE
Huatoki and McDonalds Real Estate Matapu fought out a 8-8 draw. It was 4-4
after the singles with Matapu's No1, David White upsetting last season's
Taranaki No 1, Jonno Ussher 6/4,6/3 to get his side off to a great start. No
3 Andy Roberts beat Jaden Hareb 6/4,6/1 while in the women's singles, No 1
Jenny White beat 15 year old Hine Wilson (who has transferred
from Auckland), 6/3, 6/2. Sarah Kelly beat Elle Fleming in the No 4 match
without dropping a game. Huatoki's matches were won by No 2 Amrit Rai
over Jason Hurley 6/3,6/3, No 4 Aaron West who beat Reece Furness 6/3,6/1,
No 2 Chris Wilson who beat Helen Kelly and Megan O'Donnell who defeated
Clare Goldsworthy. Matapu were helped by winning two matches by
default when Elle Fleming was injured. They also won the No 2 men's doubles
match in three sets, Roberts and Furness defeated Hareb and West, and the no
1 mixed doubles 9/8, Brother and sister David and Jenny White beat Ussher
and Wilson and the No 3 mixed doubles. Roberts made it three out of three by
teaming up with Goldsworthy to defeat Hareb and O'Donnell. For
Huatoki, their doubles wins were from the top combination of Ussher and Rai
who defeated White and Hurley and Rai completed a successful day by teaming
up with Chris Wilson and defeating Hurley and Helen Kelly.
Hooker Pacific
Pukekura had all but a clean sweep over Lockwood Design and Build Okaiawa at
Okaiawa, one match was rained off. No 1 Michael Fleming defeated Andrew
Powell 6/4,6/2 while Dennis Reid beat Vincent Bayls in three tight sets in
the No 2 match. Pukekura's no 1 didn't drop a game against Joanne Gyde but
in the doubles Reid and Thorne had to battle to beat Gyde and Beth McLeod in
three sets.
Soffe Cup
holders, Central Finance Rotokare maintained their lead with a 15-1 over
Hawera at Hawera. All but two of the 15 games were comfortable wins
with No 2 Chris Popata only dropping two games against Sean Merhtens, Shane
Devlin beat Jevan Hayward 6/4,6/0 and Blair Crowley beat Hayden Bennett
6/4,6/2.
Rotokare's top
two women Catherine Stevenson and Kelly Toa won their games against Sheri
De'ath and Erin Annabell 6/2,6/3 and 6/0,6/0 respectively. It was a
different story in the doubles with the Rotokare pair winning in the third
set tiebreak.
No 4 combination in the mixed doubles, Crowley and Atkins won their match in
a tiebreak 9/8. Hawera's only win was the top singles with Neil McCann
defeating Ben Pollard in three sets.
